Agatho the Frank

Fans of my Rebellion Trilogy (Blood Feud, Uprising and – soon to be released – The Reckoning) will be very familiar with this character.

Originally from northern France – an area once the core of the kingdom of Francia – he was captured by Flemish raiders and sold in the English slave markets.

In Blood Feud, we learn how Oslac buys Agatho from a merchant in York as a sullen teenager, whence he eventually becomes Oslac’s best, most brutal and most ruthless huscarl.

In The Reckoning, we’ll learn a little more about his backstory – as a teaser for the short story I recently wrote for an Aspects of History magazine compendium: Historical Heroes.

I’m not generally a fan of AI-generated images, and would never use one in any commercial sense (real artists every time), but I could not resist asking ChatGPT to imagine how Agatho might have looked. Yes there are issues with it, but it was only intended to be a guide; an inspiration for bringing the character to life, if you will.

I think it does that pretty well!!

Agatho in full blood lust mode. Note the short handled throwing axes (or franciscas) for which he is renowned.

To learn more about Agatho’s fransciscas, have a look at the article I wrote a while back.
